SPB Build - Wrap
When I had the SPB built by Vali Motorsports I was able to pick out the interior/exterior paint color. I went with white for a few reasons. Not only is white an iconic color for Porsche Motorsports historically, but it’s practical. White will reduce the heat inside and out compared to a dark color. White makes the interior brighter which is helpful given how cramped it is with the roll cage, racing seats, and racing nets. And white is easy to repair in the event of an incident. And lastly, I always planned to put graphics on the car and I wanted to use the base paint color as part of that design to cut down on how much I would have to wrap.
I went through a long journey of looking at past liveries to get inspiration. There are some iconic liveries you can copy (Gulf, Brumos, psychedelic, Rothmans, Martini Racing, the Pink Pig, the Green Monster, Apple Computer from the 80’s) but I felt that was too easy. You can also just put on some racing stripes and call it a day, which is the practical decision. But I wanted to make my SPB unique from all the rest so I decided to hire someone to do a custom design based on my guidance. Now, to be clear I know the best thing to do from a racing standpoint is to NOT do a wrap as it adds weight and cost to the car. So I fully realize doing any graphics is for vanity alone (I am good with that).
After lots of explores on design and color I ended up wanting to stay with something classic for Porsche so I went with white, black, and red. These are Porsche’s current motorsport primary colors with a great example being Porsche’s 963 car. I then wanted to stand out a bit so I picked a red and black that is satin in finish which not only looks great but it also cuts down on reflection back to the driver. Since I was using the white paint as part of the design that means I don’t need to do a full wrap which cuts down on cost, weight, and easy of repairs in the future. Finally I needed a design that fit the lines of the car. Here is what I came up with.
I worked with SS Customs in Menlo Park for the design work and the wrap application. They were great to work with as I went through all the design and color options. They also helped me figure out all the decals I would need for the various racing classes I wanted to participate in across PCA and POC. They also helped me figure out how to incorporate SVMC into the design as this will also be a promotion vehicle for the club. I also wanted to establish the SVMC Racing brand (more on that later). While I am not normally into red as a color I think this turned out great.
